Microsoft may have gotten this one right.
2008-07-15As part of a pre-release marketing strategy, I received a free 8 gb zune for personal use. Along with the zune, I was sent the premium zune headphones and an AC adapter for charging.
At first glance, all products were heinously overpackaged. The players come in those hard plastic-wrapped cases. I purchased a Creative Zen player which came in a nice box, one that I have kept which holds all my product instructions, extra chargers etc. At any rate, this is really a point of minor contention - it's just a pet peeve of mine.
The player itself is rather nice - I really enjoy using it. It is lightweight and very easy to use. The touch pad is quite nice, and making your way through the various menus is rather intuitive. The menu interface itself is really nice, I prefer it to that of my Zen player.
The display screen is sharp and clean, and when my music is playing, I see a big picture of the album artwork, with the artist/title displayed at the bottom. A friend remarked to me that was they preferred that to the display on their iPod - I plead ignorance because I don't have an iPod. I have yet to try out the video on this yet, namely because I unknowingly loaded it full with music, and am enjoying it too much to change it.
The premium headphones are WONDERFUL. I have a pair of over-ear Sony noise-cancelling headphones (battery powered) that I use faithfully. They have laid dormant since these earbuds have come into my possession. The buds come with a carrying pouch and 4 different pairs of rubber adapters so you can choose the most comfortable fit for your ear. These phones can be attached to the zune and the zune strap so you have a zune necklace. It's my favorite and really, only way of wearing my zune while I walk to work, or while I am at work. It's very light and I enjoy using it in the lab that I work in (or even down in the animal facility, under my gown). Sound quality is not anything to be concerned about, as it all sounds great.
I used to swear by my 60 gb creative zen, but having tried out the zune I see that they are advantageous in different ways. I will never leave for a road trip without my zen, but I prefer the zune at work as it's much lighter and contains enough songs that I will still never get bored. Microsoft may have gotten something right on this one.
