Equipped with both progressive scan (with 3-2 pulldown) and digital video equalization, the Sony DVP-S700P DVD player makes your favorite movies come alive. Progressive scan output delivers a higher scan rate (480p) than traditional DVD players--which interlace the frames rather than scan each separately--making film images appear more intensely lifelike when seen on a HD-compatible TV. Digital video equalization optimizes the picture quality of these images, allowing the user to seek the best video option between factory preset and custom settings. Other options include a digital video enhancer, which improves the contrast and picture detail, and block noise reduction, which minimizes the data noise that often interferes with DVD images. The unit also includes a 12-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter for 480p output, and a 10-bit/27 MHz video DAC for 480i output.

The DVP-S700P also delivers enhanced performance from an audio standpoint. The player's Dolby Digital and DTS outputs provide 5.1-channel surround sound when connected to a compatible receiver. In addition, the Digital Cinema Sound feature simulates the acoustic performance of Hollywood's greatest sound stages, while the TV virtual surround lets users simulate surround sound in a two-speaker setup, or even through the TV's built-in speakers.

Functionally, the player includes SmoothScan fast forward and reverse and SmoothSlow slow motion for crisp, clear scene searching, along with bookmarking, picture memory, and strobe playback. Parents will rest easy with the included parental lock feature, while everyone will appreciate the convenience of CD and DVD Text, which display artists, titles, and even jacket covers on the front panel and TV. The unit is compatible with CD, DVD, CD-R/RW, and Video CD formats.

Extremely slow to respond to commands2008-08-24
As far as the viewing quality is concerned this DVD player is acceptable compared to other equipment that is likewise seven years old. However, my biggest pet peeve is the sluggish response times, especially if you are trying to eject or open the DVD player. It usually needs to be told twice what to do. I am very dissapointed in Sony. This is a major flaw and very frustrating.
Going Strong Since 2001...2007-03-15
Got this DVD player in the year 2001, I feel it's like a dinosaur with the new slimmer DVD players, new blu-ray technology, upconverting dvd players and all, but it has never given me any problems and it is now March 2007. Given it's age, it still comes equipped to read DTS audio and be a progressive player. Only problem is I don't know what I will do with this when I get my blu-ray or HD DVD player...I guess it can go in my bedroom...
Great reliable DVD Spinner!2006-10-02
I have high praises to give this unit.....very high praises. Compared to my last unit, this thing is a dream. My last player died within 6 months. According to the repairman, every component inside the player died so they gave me this model. Ive had it for 5 years and have been very pleased with its longevity. It's only been sent in for repair one time due to that sound issue that was mentioned in another review. Sound intermittently cuts out.(great picture though) Same for its cd audio function. The sound also cuts out on that. It needed a new laser in 2002. Since then, I havent had a problem. Considering the one time for repair, its a great machine. After all, nothing in this world is perfect. Highly recommended durable player.

Great while it lasted2003-12-03
My Sony DVP-NS700P worked very well until last week when the sound quit working, (still has a great picture!). I have only owned two progressive scan DVD players, the other was a Toshiba and I liked this one best. I would have given it a 5 star rating two weeks ago!
