I ordered this mixer thinking there was no way I wouldn't like it, it's a KitchenAid after all, they're the best, right? After the first couple of uses it became evident that this is not meant for regular-sized batches of cookies or cake; it is simply too big for household use. The orbital beaters don't reach the bottom of the bowl so it is necessary to frequently stop the mixer, lower the bowl, remove the shield & spout, scrape with a spatula, raise the bowl, replace the shield and spout, and turn it back on. What a hassle! The only plus in my opinion is the all-metal construction. I sold mine on Craigslist and my next mixer will be a traditional two-beater type, metal or not. Forget KitchenAid.
For years I've been wanting to get this mixer, but always found excuses not to spend so much money on it. Well, I finally got it, and it is worth every penny. Recipes I wouldn't consider making, because my old mixer didn't have enough power, I can now make with ease. Even making multiple batches of chocolate chip cookies is a snap now. KitchenAid's Pro 6-Quart Stand Mixer's heavy-duty motor continues to work even when stressed to the max.
The only slight drawback is its weight. Plan on where you intend to use this mixer, and make that spot its permanant home because KitchenAid's Pro 6-Quart Stand Mixer is NOT portable. It's a workhorse, but not portable.
And, although KitchenAid no longer makes the Empire Red color for its newest updated version of the Pro 6, the Empire Red color looks perfect in my kitchen. I LOVE this mixer!
I am sure this mixer is great for those who make large quantities, but just for a normal recipe (say, one batch of cookies) it really is too big. The batter clings to the beater in a big ball and doesn't mix, I have to always stop it and scrape the contents back into the bowl to continue mixing. But it did make very nice mashed potatoes.
Please read all the 1 and 2 star reviews and take that to heart which I didn't when I agreed to accept this monstrosity as a gift. This machine is underpowered and WHINEY + VERY LOUD and started to clunk as if something came loose inside after I used it 2 times making an annoying knocking sound. The bowl snap in mechanism is cumbersome, and the overall appearance to me in a grey metallic color was ugly. I returned the machine to the company I bought it from as Kitchen Aid could not guarantee me a replacement. They said they had none in stock????? and could not give me a time frame as to when it could be replaced. Since I need this for work that wasn't good enough. I returned it to the mail order place instead and I purchased a DeLonghi 7 quart (much higher wattage and power)from Amazon bypassing a 40$ shipping fee from the other company. Some professionals have told me their Kitchen Aid mixers are very reliable and work wonderfully but they have the smaller mixers. I am much happier with the DeLonghi 7 quart mixer I purchased.
Really, I would. Reliable, dosen't need to be nudged into doing what I ask, can be left unsupervised with mixes, and does a fine job of it all.
I've done everything from cheese cakes, to marigues, to whipped cream. And it has performed with perfection.
I got a great deal on this mixer through an Amazon gold box discount a little over a year ago. Still pricy, but well worth the investment. My mixer fits underneath my cabinets, which eliminates the need to move it.
Not limited to larger jobs, I use it for small jobs, just to avoid the hassle of looking for my hand mixer and varying parts; not to mention I can quickly turn it on and let it hande the workload while I attend to other things in the kitchen. Needless to say it gets used more often than not.
Considering the expense, I took the time to read the manuals instead of plugging it in and treating like a $19.99 discount store mixer. Heed the warnings and yours too will last without knocks, smoke, or dripping oil.
The beaters and head gets a little getting used to as do all new concepts. Easier way to attach beaters: Place the beater in the bowl prior to placing the bowl on the machine. While bowl is in lowered position, reach into bowl and attach beater. Raise bowl and attach shield from either side.
