My wife bakes bread often and for years swore by the Kitchenaid mixer given her as a collective family present, which she passed on to her sister when we bought her a new "heavy duty" mixer. The new one failed within days and was replaced by the factory after way too many calls; the replacement failed after a couple years of average use and being essentially unable to complete any bread dough recipe as advertised. It's useless and disappointing, and sadly we have a lot of useless accessories with it too. We have heard no response from Kithenaid and will after years of loyalty and hundreds of dollars buy something else from perhaps Viking. Kitchenaid mixers are not what they were, and the Kitchenaid company is unresponsive to its customers. Don't waste your money!
I bought this mixer mostly for mixing bread doughs. My first model stripped its gears shortly after I received it, and Kitchen-Aid was quick to send a replacement. Now over a year later the same happened to my replacement model. Both times it happened while mixing bread dough on speed 2, which is the only speed allowed by the model for bread dough. I've used Kitchen-Aid models in commercial kitchens, so I thought the Kitchen-Aid Professional Series was what I wanted. Apparently I was wrong about the integrity of this company's products. I would have been a loyal customer, but I will not buy Kitchen Aid again.
I absolutely LOVE this mixer. I have been throught so many mixer and I like to bake and cook. This one can do it all.
I wasn't going to write a review for this because there's already plenty of them on here, but I decided to share my experience with it so far.
I got one of these on 02/27/2004. I was pretty excited because it's my first decent KA mixer (I had an old model from the 40's prior to this one). The main reason I decided to purchase this was to make pizza dough and bread. I make a lot of pizza and got tired of kneading the dough by hand. So, the first thing I decided to do was try it out making some dough. I used a recipe for NY style dough that only uses 6 cups of flour (not a lot for this size mixer). It didn't like it. The mixer basically "burned up" the first time I used it. It didn't actually burn up as in flames and smoke or anything and it will still run, but it knocks something fierce.
I called KA the next day and they sent me a new one, I got it today (03/03/2004). At first the person I spoke to acted like it was normal for it to make the knocking sound, that was until I made it clear to him that it was doing it with it under no load. He thought I meant it was doing it while kneading only. Anyway, I don't recommend it (so far) if you're thinking about getting one for the same reasons I did. Maybe this one will last, but I don't have high hopes at all. I really don't even want to try making dough with the new one because of this (in fear of it doing the same thing the last one did). Yeah I could try it and get it replaced again if it does the same thing but talk about a hassle.
If I had it to do over again I would probably get a Bosch 7010 (the model with the modified "american style" dough hook). The only reason I didn't in the first place is because this KA looks better. But like they say, looks aren't everything...
I only gave it 3 stars based on looks and the fact that it probably works great for lighter loads. Personally, I'd rather mix up lighter stuff by hand in a mixing bowl instead of dirtying the mixer.
I am a professional baker and got this for Christmas from my precious beloved--unfortunately my machine lasted about a year before gears went bad and I had no receipt or bar code for Customer Service, who was VERY helpful and shipped me a brand new one within that week so I could bake, except I picked wrong color before it arrived, so I called and they shipped another that day. I had two Kitchenaids sitting in boxes by my door waiting for UPS--and kept the black one like this. You can knead bread in it! Don't buy a bread machine! Makes hefty amounts of cookie dough in a breeze and is awesome in power. Whipped cream, meringues, loft. Most of all Kitchen Aid stands behind their products and the customer service is the best I have ever dealt with!
