Telrad Finder Sight
Product Description:
The easiest way to aim a telescope. The view seen through the window of the Telrad is continuous with the sky around it, not magnified or upside down. Three rings are lighted and appear to lie among the stars. The small ring outlines the Moon-sized area seen in the telescope. The large outer ring outlines the area seen in a standard Finderscope. To point your telescope, just look through the Telrad and move the telescope until the rings are centered on the object. The Telrad is 8 inches long. Weighs 11 ounces and mounts on any telescope without drilling any holes. It unlocks from its base for separate storage. Requires 2 AA batteries (not included).

Tel-Rad is GOOD
2010-03-14The Tel-Rad is the way to go for a finder. The ONLY fault that I can find [and it didn't rank high enough to deduct a star] is the dew. I understand that there is a shield for that but, alas , it isn't perfect either. That said, I love my Tel-Rad and highly reccomend it.

Showtime!!
2010-02-10Unlike most of the review writers for this product, I use this for a followspot in technical theatre. The adjustable mirror makes for easy calibration, and the fact that only the spotlight operator can see the projection keeps you from distracting the audience. It is easy to remove the adhesive strips so you don't damage the light, and the light weight allows you to attach it with magnets for easy removal. Tape is just as good.

Indispensible
2010-01-23With my 12" Dobsonion this is the finder I always use first. It is best used with both eyes open - one looking through the reticle window and one above or outside the window. Just centre it on the object or expected area of sky and then move to your magnifying finder scope. Find the fuzzy whatsit you're looking for, centre on the cross-hairs, and then look in your telescope. A three-part process which is fast and usually easy. The Telrad is just brilliant. I can't imagine trying to find objects using the finder scope first. That would be much more challenging and time-consuming. Since I intend to replace my finder scope soon with a right-angle finder scope (to save my neck) the Telrad will be essential then as you can't really use a right-angle finder scope for searching the sky. Some accessories like premium eyepieces, detailed star maps, etc, can enhance your observing but this does more than enhance, it simplifies everything.

No beauty, but it works
2009-09-09This is no streamlined, compact piece of gear. It's best used on Newtonian or Cassegrain scopes with 6" or larger mirrors. If you have the space, though, it's a very useful accessory. I would definitely recommend it to people who want to use a scope to interest children in astronomy. It avoids the frustration and discouragement of searching the skies with narrow field of view optics.

Driving with a cell phone is a lot less dangerous than driving on prescription drugs
There's a lot of debate today about the safety of using cell phones while driving. Statistics show that those who use cell phones while driving cause a much greater percentage of accidents than those who avoid using their cell phones. And the studies have shown that it's not just the physical coordination required to punch numbers into the cell phone while you're trying to work the vehicle that causes accidents; it's actually the lack of attention resulting from driving and talking on the cell phone at the same time. It seems that when you're distracted, you're more likely to cause accidents.
In terms of public safety, it's probably correct to say that banning cell phones would reduce the number of traffic accidents. But I think, more accurately, it depends on the person. Some people are operating on, shall we say, lower power CPUs in their heads to begin with. They might be zoned out on prescription drugs, and when you add a cell phone to the equation, they do become a danger to the ...

White Balance - If you ever ended up with yellow-tinted video, chances are you forgot to white balance. It's worthwhile to white balance every time you use your camera to get the highest quality video. If your camera doesn't have this feature, it may have an automatic or internal system. What white balancing does is adjust the intensity of the colors being recorded according to the existing light. Make sure you white balance every time the lighting conditions change; if you record video inside and then go outside, your lighting conditions have changed and you need to instruc ...
