Straight 21" Bamboo pipe in "DD". 4 front holes and 1 back hole. The sound is made by blowing in the end of the flute. Hold the flute under your bottom lip and blow over the crescent cut at the top edge. These flutes are within 5-8 cents of pitch; rarely are they off by 10 cents. A cent is a unit of measuring intervals in music. Each half step (semitone) is made up of 100 cents.

Decent product2007-12-07
I just recieved my DD shakuhachi today. It took me a couple minutes to figure out the right angle to get the notes, but it was fairly simple. It would have been nice if it had come with some tips on how to play it though.
It is definately a beginners shakuhachi and if want a serious shakuhachi, this isn't it.
It also is not very decorative and I'd have preferred not to have the big "DD" printed on the intrument itself. it is large and a bit hard to play with my smaller hands.
All in all though, it is a good instrument and is just as I expected it to be.
The Gateway Drug to Wind Instruments2006-07-28
It took me a while to figure out how to actually produce a tone with the shakuhachi, being my first use of a wind instrument, but I loved the sound...once I got it. Right now I'm still getting the hang of how to work this thing, but I can get a few notes, and I figure some googling may lead me to a resource or two that can help my playing reach a level that I can present to my friends and family without fear of being shunned.

I recommend this specific model to anyone interested in wind instruments. It has a nice sound, is incredibly inexpensive, and is large enough to be used by teenagers and adults (but I'm sure a child could use it as well!). If it's not your thing, let me tell you, it makes a nice bamboo back-scratcher.

HINT: To play the shakuhachi, blow at an angle into the curved/sloping slot/wannabe reed at the top of the instrument and put your fingers on some of the holes. Enjoy.
