For starters, consider the staggering depth and breadth of his repertoire (perhaps matched only by those of Bob Dylan and Ray Charles), embracing ancient folk tunes ("Streets of Laredo"), teen pop ("Ballad of a Teenage Queen"), mature contemporary rock ("Highway Patrolman"), gospel ("Were You There When They Crucified My Lord"), topical fare ("Ballad of Ira Hayes"), country standards ("Time Changes Everything"), novelties ("One Piece at a Time"), and more. Then there's the way his spare, spacious sound opens up to take in horns ("Ring of Fire"), strings ("Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down"), anything. This is awesome. I recommend this product. My step-father is 75 years old and he loves Johnny Cash. He nearly cried when I gave it to him; he was so grateful. He played the music and it captured Johnny Cash's earlier days and also later. I enjoyed it also.

He had something that alot of musicians lack today, heart. All of his songs reflect a journey filled with pain and sorrow and looking for hope. But, he knew his need for God. A great, great collection for the price.

I think that it is a great compilation. I would have enjoyed more of his later works, including some rare covers, but otherwise every recording was wonderful. This was a gift for my father & he thoroughly enjoyed it.
