Only way to use this scanner with a Mac is VMware Fusion or similar Windows Virtual Machine...2009-07-01
I have a Macbook Pro with all the updates (MacOS X 10.5.7), 4GB RAM, etc.
I wanted to try this product for scanning old family photos while visiting relatives overseas.
The compact size and its use of USB power are great assets - but the lack of Mac support concerned me. I still bought the unit and went on my trip.

Now, as I had a chance to try the unit out, I concede that it is virtually useless for MacOS X users. All one can do is load the Pentax TWAIN driver for MacOS, which gives you only basic scanning capabilities and not much else. Without calibration utilities, etc. all you can scan are B&W documents. Rest comes out horrible.

This is where my trusted Windows XP virtual machine came in handy. I started the Windows instance (concurrently with MacOS) and installed the included Scanner driver plus Scanning Software from the CD. What a world of difference! The scanner is calibrated, the scans are clear and crisp.
With VMware Fusion, I scan directly into a subdirectory in my MacOS file tree - as one can define and mount MacOS directories as virtual disks in Windows.

In conclusion - if you are a Mac owner and want to use this scanner for photos, etc., you will need to install it on a Windows virtual machine and drive the scanner that way. Else, it will not serve a Mac user well...
Great little device2009-06-29
This scanner really works well. It temporarily saves the image and if you want to keep can it with another name for modification later. It really does all it says it does.
a title2009-06-20
The scanner does exactly what I need it to do and it does it across platforms.
Great Hardware, Awful Software2009-06-20
This is a really handy scanner. It grabs the pages nicely and feeds through smoothly and straight. The "leatherette" carrying case is a nice addition, and I feel confident that I can stuff it in my computer bag and have it emerge in one piece (as I have done already a number of times).

My gripe is that the software is truly awful. Granted, you don't have to use it, it's a standard TWAIN device, but most people don't have a better alternative handy. I've been suffering through it since I don't really use the unit more than once or twice a week, but more frequent users are going to want a better replacement (maybe Adobe Acrobat).
Compact scanner; not a fast one2009-06-19
Get this scanner as something to use while traveling with a netbook or notebook computer. It's simply too slow to put up with on a desktop machine. I use it with an Asus 1000he netbook & found that it works on a USB port power suply even on full computer battery power. However, it's a pain slipping each and every page in the slot & waiting for the relatively slow scan. This scanner is for someone who really, really hates any additional weight to haul around with the notebook.

Driving with a cell phone is a lot less dangerous than driving on prescription drugs
There's a lot of debate today about the safety of using cell phones while driving. Statistics show that those who use cell phones while driving cause a much greater percentage of accidents than those who avoid using their cell phones. And the studies have shown that it's not just the physical coordination required to punch numbers into the cell phone while you're trying to work the vehicle that causes accidents; it's actually the lack of attention resulting from driving and talking on the cell phone at the same time. It seems that when you're distracted, you're more likely to cause accidents. In terms of public safety, it's probably correct to say that banning cell phones would reduce the number of traffic accidents. But I think, more accurately, it depends on the person. Some people are operating on, shall we say, lower power CPUs in their heads to begin with. They might be zoned out on prescription drugs, and when you add a cell phone to the equation, they do become a danger to the ...
