Outstanding performance for a small price
2009-07-02I received this printer as a 'throw-in' when purchasing my last notebook. I wasn't expecting that much from it, just to print the ocassional letter, report, coupon, and picture. Well I was frankly blown-away by the print quality.
For written material this is about as good as it gets. Strikingly crisp text, no bleeding ever, easy to read, outstanding. By far the best text I have ever seen on an inkjet printer. Pictures have good, deep colors although I prefer to have my pictures pritned out and have only printed a handful.
Very easy to use. Changing cartridges is literally a snap, and fairly good cartridge life. And to top it off it is energy star rated. Also this has been a solid performer for me for some time, with zero problems ever. For my next printer I will defintely have Canon at the top of the list. Just very solid quality for an entry-level printer. They could have skimped, they did not. That says something for all their lines.
Works great with envelopes!
2009-03-27This printer works great for envelopes. We are printing out nearly 100 envelopes for wedding invites, and this printer is a trooper, it keeps chugging on, and it's really doing a great job!
On another note, I must add, we tried using our other printer, a lexmark all-in-one, and it was garbage, it jammed and destroyed our envelopes like you wouldn't believe. I'm thinking it may have to do with the fact that the paper feeder on this printer works straight through, it doesn't bend your paper / envelope. whereas the all-in-one tried bending the envelope before printing, so it really didn't work that good.
I love this printer however, and my next printer will also be a Canon!
Cheap, cheap, cheap - you get what you pay for
2009-02-14This printer is a mess. Yes, it's inexpensive (mine was free with rebate). But it's your classic loss leader, "razor and blade" model - give the printer (razor) away, stick it to the customer on cartridges (blades). Canon software for this printer is programmed to reject refilled cartridges, even good ones. The printer routinely breaks in some fashion or another. Streaky, substandard printing, even with Canon carts. In short, the hassle factor of owning this printer FAR exceeds the savings you might get. In simple terms, STAY AWAY!
Canon Pixma ip1800 known issues with paper feed
2008-10-29I have the 1800 model (Canon Pixma ip1800) and there is a factory flaw in the paper feed mechanism so that the printer cannot actually print. They are sending me a new one, but I have already spend SO MUCH TIME dealing with other issues the printer presented out of the box; Vista compatibility problems, missing cables, etc. Caveat emptor!
Here is a further description of my experience with a similar model of Canon printers:
After purchasing the Canon Pixma ip1800, and expending immense quantities of time, money and effort dealing with the initial myriad of problems I was presented with out of the box, I was still left with a piece of equipment that did not function and has yet to print one page.
Today I again contacted Canon by phone and Lo and Behold! My printer is apparently one of many machines they made which have a known paper feed issue and therefore do not work at all. They are sending me a replacement and their apologies (well, I took that last part as implied). There were so many units with this problem of a non-functioning paper feed mechanism, the tech told me, that they stopped manufacturing the model altogether.
I just think there should be a law about this. I mean, it would have been nice if they could have mentioned the model's KNOWN DEFECT on their website so I could have been advised of it sooner, like during one of the umpteen times I visited their site for the other fixable, but nevertheless irritating issues which my printer had.
I am furious, exhausted, and without the documents which I needed to print. So yeah, I would NOT recommend this model, and if you were lucky enough to skirt by with a model that happens to work then I am happy for you, but man, I don't think I could bear to hear about it.
Unless of course by some fluke we are neighbors. Which in that case, would you know if your computer has the capacity to recognize MS Works files burned to cd from Windows Vista? Cause I have some things I REALLY need to print!!!!
Absolute disaster!
2008-09-10This is far most the greatest mistake of all my "buyer's-life".
The printer itself is good, but after 3 or 4 refills (I can't remember correctly), the cartridges self-destroyed themselves!
Pixma ip1800 is pre-programmed to do that, if you refill inks for 3 or 4 times. It is completely useless to me right now. I am supposed to buy new inks, which cost like the printer itself, maybe even higher.
I am not alone in this. On a printer-help website goes a long thread of all of us, with same experience:

We all have same symptoms: "orange light blinks 7x and the green 1x", and says "Some ink cartridges cannot be recognized."
Nothing helps - nor software reset tool (it frezees), nor instructions from manual regarding resetting setting of printer. We tried any possible solution.
Some of them contacted staff at Canon, and they confirmed that the printer is EPROM-preprogrammed to destroy the inks after counting some quota number of pages printed.
Greedy bastardz! I will never ever buy something from Cannon. I think my next printer will be a Hewlett Packard, within the same price range.
