no whistle!2008-11-30
I always buy this tea kettle, but this is the only time I was disappointed. The whistle does not work. Can be dangerous because the kettle may dry out and brake if you forget about it.
I believe the search is over...2008-11-26
As the title above indicates I may have found my ideal teapot. Oh, I searched, tried the one from jcpenny, had the plastic flap over the spout break. Bought another metal one, the handle was bare metal and I just loved the sensation when I grabbed it after it had been heating for awhile.
Ok I thought lets get creative, lets go copper! Yes paid 50 for a nice copper teapot, oops covered in lacquer which I had to remove but I did this. Since it's cold and dry now I sometimes let some water boil just to let steam into the air (poor mans humidifier?) but the copper pot didn't whistle so I forget it and it cooked all the water out. The spout was soldered on and that had fallen off, it was done for. Found this pot, it's glass so that is a pleasant switch, no metal, can see inside. Keep it on the small burner and it heats quick, handle doesn't even get warm. Top pops right off, no steam burns, nice pour, damn this thing seems glitch free. This is my third cup of tea with it and I am so pleased that I just bought another as a backup. Time will be the ultimate judge but thus far it seems as close to the perfect teapot as I could imagine and/or hope for.
Elegant kettle2008-11-24
This kettle is sleek and attractive. I love minimalist pieces. It's also fun to watch it bubble and boil. The whistle is soft and pleasant. Highly recommended for yourself or as a gift for the tea lover.
I am happy with the kettle2008-11-22
I read nearly all of the reviews and with a bit of hesitation ordered the kettle and I am quite happy with it. It is glass w/plastic parts so use some care with it, as previous posts mentioned, start on a low flame and then turn up but don't let the flame go around the sides of pot. The handle has never been too hot to handle & the water heats faster than my old kettle. The whistle isn't the greatest but it works, I would avoid letting it whistle for too long because the top does start to give off a plastic smell. It isn't awkward taking the top off once water has boiled. So, it's not a clunker, worry-free kettle like my old metal one but with just a little care it's perfect.
Also, as others mentioned, it does NOT hold 12 standard/measurement cups, more like 5-6. It's fine for a lg. coffee press or teapot.
cheap and effective, but look elsewhere2008-11-21
I've used this kettle for about a week on an electric, glass stovetop using the supplied metal trinket for heat distribution. Here are my observations so far:
- It takes much longer to boil the same amount of water vs traditional kettles
- The handle feels flimsy, and just by its design of coming down over the pot so close to the glass, it *DOES* get very warm. I wouldn't go so far as to say the handle is hot, but some people may not feel comfortable with it's temperature once the pot is boiling.
- I feel like this kettle pours water ineffectively. The water does not splatter on it's way out, but it is not in as nice a stream as other kettles I've used.
- Other reviewers have stated their kettle does not whistle. My kettle does whistle, but it is nowhere near as loud as a traditional kettle; I cannot hear the whistling unless I am in the same room as the kettle.
- I do like the fact that it is easy to clean and I can see that it is clean (versus other kettles where you can see discoloration inside the pot)

Overall, it get's the jobs done, but if you're coming to this kettle from a more traditional kettle, I think you'll be disappointed.
