Product Description:

While other digital cameras may use touch screens to access settings, the new Stylus 1050 SW has a shockproof, waterproof and freezeproof body that is sensitive to touch all over. So getting to the most common menu settings in situations where pushing buttons takes time or is difficult is now as fast and easy as a tap on the top, back or sides of the camera. The rugged 10.1-megapixel Stylus 1050 SW is designed to take the hard knocks that everyday life particularly those with kids can throw its way, so you know that the memories it captures will be protected. It can handle five-foot drops to the hard ground, operate in freezing snowstorms, and swim with the fishes lethal conditions for most other digital cameras. Additionally, the Stylus 1050 SW weathers the elements in style with four trendy colors (blue, champagne, silver and black) and a new streamlined body. The sleek, lens-protecting faceplate slides down, turning the camera on and revealing the lens in an instant to capture the moment.

If you don't want to miss a thing, this camera's not for you.2010-03-20
I had purchased this camera a few months ago due to the shockproof characteristic, however I'm now buying a new camera because the lag when taking a picture is so slow that I feel it misses everything. Almost not even worth the extra shockproof/waterproof capabilities.
Perfect2010-02-01
I really like this camera. When they say its durable and shockproof, they aren't lying. I have dropped this thing a lot already and there is yet to be a scratch on it. I took it under water and the pictures looks amazing and very clear. I would definitely suggest buying this camera if you have broken a bunch in the past like me.
Excellent choice2010-01-22
OK, it isn't a professional camera. But having carried it all over the world, I can say it has survived drops, smashes in luggage bins, duststorms in the desert, and underwater during a heavy squall in Belize. Picture quality is outstanding, and it fits in a shirt pocket. I'm exceptionally happy with it.
Water leaked in, camera failed, Olympus didn't want to honor warranty2010-01-07
Pros; decent photos, simple enough to use, intuitive controls, waterproof(maybe)

Cons; sliding lens cover moves in bag or pocket turning on camera and leads to dead battery. not easy to see viewfinder when snorkeling.

I treated this camera with much TLC. No drops, no freezing weather, easy photos in friendly environment.

First time I used it to take surfing pics/videos in bali it failed due to water leaking into battery compartment.

Olympus service Bangkok refused to honor 1 year warranty. After taking considerable time to scan applicable documents and email to Japan Olympus, Bangkok service reversed their decision and gave me what they claim is a new SW1050, however they refused to give me the warranty card for this allegedly NEW camera.

I ask myself why does Olympus not stand behind a brand new camera. I felt like I was pulling teeth and they gave me a camera and said "you're on your own"

I am afraid to use it for water shots because despite being brand new, if it fails for whatever reason I am alone, stuck, marooned.

I have used Olympus medical endoscopes and these fine intruments have saved lives and the support is excellent.

It is hard to believe I am dealing with the same company in the above matter.

I would have to think long and hard before purchasing another Olympus product, especially a camera. I'd still highly recommend their endoscopes.
Very Slow Shutter2009-12-06
There are many reviews about slow shutter but I wanted to add my experience. The shutter is so slow that the camera simply cannot be used for shots of moving scenes. I was trying to take a picture of my wife on the teacups at Disneyland. Of the 15 pictures I took, the only one that does not show her back is the one I took before the ride started. The camera is also hard to use in sunlight and is quite prone to out of focus pictures. I had a Canon before this. I will not buy another Olympus and although this camera is fairly new, I'm tossing it.

Camera basics: shutter-speed, aperture and ISO
In this article, I’ll introduce you to the basic elements that you can use to control exposure in your shooting. If you have a digital SLR, there will be a way to set all of these controls on your camera, but since they differ between manufacturers and models, you’ll need to refer to your camera’s manual to find out exactly how to change them. All cameras, whether an ancient film camera, or a more modern digital, work in pretty much the same way. Photographs are taken by letting light fall onto a light-sensitive medium, which records the image. Traditionally, this has been film, but more recently, it tends to be a digital sensor. The more light that falls onto the film or sensor, the lighter the image. Put simply, a camera consists of a light-tight box that stores a light-sensitive device (either a film or a digital sensor), a lens that magnifies and focuses the image onto that light-sensitive device through a hole in the box (called the aperture) , and a shutter that opens ...
Printer Buying Guide
What kind of printer is best for me? Choosing the right printer can be a daunting task. There are several different types of printing technology to choose from, each suited for different needs. Printers come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny travel companions to workgroup workhorses; some are geared toward photographers, others are for multitaskers. And the many specifications for resolution and speed can be misleading. As a rule of thumb, inkjet printers are a must for long-lasting photos, while laser printers are best to produce speedy text documents. User types: Home user | Budding novelist | Digital photographer | Entrepreneur | Corporate cog | Frequent flier Home user  The home user demands a lot from a printer. The device must tackle everything from a book report to a newsletter to the occasional snapshot--all without breaking the budget.
