Great printer with a few big flaws.
2008-02-04I want to give my R1800 a 5 star review because when it prints properly, it creates prints that are as good or better than anything I can have seen through a photo printing service. It really is quite amazing. The problem is that it doesn't always print properly. In fact, I have a problem with output about 50% of the time when I print in very high resolutions. I often get prints that have severe color calibration issues on anything I print with Photoshop - which means almost everything I print. My monitor is calibrated correctly and I get perfect calibration using other printers (which I do because of the second issue I have that I will mention momentarily), but there is something afoot with color profiles using Photoshop and the R1800.
I know there are fixes on the web, but when I pay over $500 for a printer, I shouldn't have to google like a mad person trying to make my printer work properly with number one imaging software in the world. Shame on Epson for not creating a fix by now.
Two other complaints include the oft cited ink issue. Ink is expensive and this printer eats it for breakfast. I do use two other printers for anything out of creating photographic prints because of this. The second complaint involves CD printing - something I have never been able to get to work. It's not a big deal, I didn't buy it for CD printing, but it is annoying that the printer is so problematic in regards to it.
I don't regret buying the R1800 because the print quality really is exceptional when it is working properly. I am just very disappointed with Epson for not fixing the color calibration issue. I will rethink buying another Epson product next time for this reason.

Excellent Printer!
2008-01-18Excellent Printer! Handles thick paper, + feeds straight. Just be sure to use Epson ink.

Amazing !!!
2008-01-13I could not believe the detail that this printer gives, my pictures look like post cards, great color!

Epson is NOT for Mac users at ALL!
2008-01-08I have used Epson products for the last several years. I started experiencing issues with Epson around the time that Mac OSX came out. I am a graphic designer and have always liked the quality of the Epson prints. BUT this printer has caused nothing but issues.
The paper feed is highly temperamental, and I waste so much time dealing with the paper feed. If you are planning on ONLY using standard laser paper, not cover weight or photo paper, you may find this is fine. I am planning on switching to HP from now on.
I also find that my Epson scanner does NOT work at all with my Intel Mac, and several emails to customer service have never been answered except with the automated..."do Not reply" that someone will answer my question soon.
Their customer service has become non existent.
If you feel you want to risk never upgrading you computer or having any issues that need Epson Customer service, then this is a good buy. I am done forver with Epson....oh, and probably okay for PC users, too! Just not for a Mac running 10.4.X

This printer is incredible!
2008-01-08I have been a loyal Epson wide-format photoprinter user for about 6-7 years. When my last printer gave up the ghost, I was in the market for a new one for my photography business. I chose this printer, even though an Epson rep that I encountered at a local big box-type store tried to sway me from it to a newer, but less comprehensive model. When the printer arrived, I tried 2 photos out on it. This was nothing short of amazing. I had one from my old printer to compare the first one to, and the difference, using the gloss optimizer toner function was complelely obvioius. This is a photo of an archway at a Scottish castle. There is a depth of field that shows up from the new printer that was only hinted at by the older model. I then tried another photo scanned from a black/white photo of the dog we owned when I was a child. I used the gloss function at the lower level. While it was noticible, for a truely important photo with depth of field needs, by all means, use the high function. You will see the difference. The colors, even with regular printing, stand out, printing on a DVD or CD are impressive and the accompanying software for this function is user-friendly. For the photographer who needs an outstanding level of output without spending over $1000, this is the one. Epson has done it again!
